Kanha Through the Years

The history of this park began long before it became famous for safaris and tigers. This park was simply a large forest during the time of the Gond Dynasty. They ruled the area, and the Baiga and Gond tribes lived in the region and even practiced traditional farming methods. They were not scared of the animals and even understood the habits of animals better than anyone else. Then, in the 19th century, rules were introduced to protect the forest, and cutting trees like Sal, Teak, Saja, Shisham, and Bija was restricted. This was one of the first steps for the conservation of greenery in Kanha.

The Kanha was officially declared a national park in 1955, and later, in 1973, it became a Tiger Reserve under India’s Project Tiger. Because of this, Kanha became a protected spot in India for the conservation of flora and animals. The park became famous among people when it inspired Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book.”

Now, Kanha is managed nicely and it shelters the animals like Royal Bengal Tiger, barasingha, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, and countless other species. A lot of people visit this park now to get chances to observe the tigers, wild animals, birds, and even the amazing flora. You can go inside the park through gypsy safaris and get the opportunity to explore this park yourself.
